I was having the best time of my life. I couldn’t remember ever being so happy. Drew made me happy. He made me feel alive, like I was finally living for the first time in all my twenty-one years. I had laughed more with him in the past week than I had in my entire life, or at least that’s what it felt like. I felt whole and I never wanted winter break to end. I had spent more time at his house than I had in my dorm.

Tonight, we were officially going out together. It was the first time we were going to venture outside his house. It had taken a lot of coaxing, but he’d finally agreed. It was New Year’s Eve and like so many grown-ups, we were going out for a nice dinner, dancing and a lot of fun. I had bought a new dress for the night. New to me. It was from a second-hand store near campus. I loved that cocktail dresses were almost always like new even when they were used. No woman likes to wear a cocktail dress more than a couple times, which always works out great for poor, struggling students like me.

As I slid on a shade of red lipstick, I thought about what next week would look like. I was used to seeing him every day and sleeping in his arms. I didn’t want to sleep alone. I liked seeing him every morning and sharing our coffee together and hanging out doing absolutely nothing.

“Don’t think about that now,” I told myself. “Tonight is about enjoying what you have, not what you might lose.”

I checked the time and realized I was running behind. I grabbed my coat and quickly shrugged it on while walking out the door. Neither of us was feeling quite brave enough to have him come to my dorm room to pick me up. I was meeting him outside the building. I walked out front, the cold wind blowing the skirt of the red sequined dress I was wearing. Drew got out of his modest four-door and opened the passenger door for me.

We skipped the usual kiss hello just in case someone was around that recognized us. I got in the car and waited for him get in.

“You look stunning,” he said, pulling away from the curb.

“Thank you. You look nice, very handsome,” I told him.

He looked dashing, really. He was wearing a black suit with a white tie. I felt like a real adult. I knew plenty of my fellow students were probably already drunk and on their way to vomiting or passing out in some frat house. I felt like I was head and shoulders above them as we headed to the fancy restaurant where Drew had made reservations.

When we arrived at the restaurant and had some distance between us and the college campus, both of us relaxed. Although we talked very little about how our relationship could be perceived by others, I could tell he wasn’t comfortable being in public with me.
